Beer Review: Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel

Another beer from the world’s oldest brewery, this time, the Dunkelweizen.  Here’s my review:

Pours a tawny copper color in the glass with a fluffy capping of foam.

Gives off aromas of bread, chocolate, toffee, orange zest, spices like cardamom, perhaps saffron.  Also some sweet molasses, clove and banana, the latter two a result of the yeast no doubt.  This beer has a very enticing and rich nose.

On the tongue it is sweet, and rich, with bready malts upfront.   The high carbonation carries lemon citrus notes mid-palate followed by a clove, banana and spiced finish with some esters and hints of bubblegum.

This is a really nice beer good farm both warm and cold weather and large glasses to be quaffed heavily.  Some smoked salmon on rye would be a pretty tasty lunch with this one.  Pumpkin pie oddly enough comes to mind.  I think it is the spices and other fall flavors that will harmonize well.  Of course, this is a German beer so don’t forget the sausages!
