Beer Review: Porterhouse Oyster Stout

The cap on this beer is what struck me.  It’s a pull-tab, almost like the old aluminum cans of beer.

It’s called an oyster stout on the label, but can be categorized as an Irish dry stout, like a Guinness.  The addition of the oysters in the brew (yes, they really do it) is for the mineral quality added by the shells, or some brewers just use the name in suggestion that it should be paired with oysters.  Here’s my review:

Comes out of the bottle black with brown highlights, with a fine khaki head.

Bread, roasted chocolate, coffee on the nose.

Sweet and roasty malt upfront on the palate creamy and full bodied with a minerally and scarcely bitter and sour twang on back.  There are hints of fruit, perhaps some licorice and cherry.

This beer is much like a Guinness with the creamy body and hint of sour following the roasty notes.  There is that nice mineral snap that breaks up the sweet chocolate and coffee up front.

It is highly drinkable, and dare I say, it’s better than Guinness?
