Beer Review: Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet

In Black IPA, Reviews on January 29, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Another beer brought to me by a Tabor, this time Luke brought me Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet.  A black IPA is really one of my favorite styles.  I think it delivers everything a beer nerd desires.  The dark malt delivers roasty flavors of chocolate and coffee that stout drinkers crave, while the hops deliver a bright burst of bitter citrus that hopheads love.  All in all it’s the best of both worlds, and I love them, and a double black IPA? C’mon. Here’s my review:

Pours dark brown to black with a tan head

An aromatic harmony of dark malt and bright hops deliver notes of coffee, grapefruit, chocolate and orange zest all at once.  This beer delivers on the first whiff.

A sweet and rich malt taste, with roasty coffee, dark chocolate up front that fades to a supporting role as the hops step in mid palate and dominate with bitter, grassy, flavors then the citrus follows and lead to a lingering bitter pine finish with a touch of roast.  Incredible from start to finish.

Medium to full body.

Rich and sweet, with a hop bite.  This beer is simple and delicious, yet deeply complex flavors when you really get into it.  This paradox creates the demand for another sip, which demands another until the bottle is gone.  The 10% is well hidden in the bold flavors, I really enjoyed this beer.  Thanks again Luke!
