Beer Review: Stoudt’s Double IPA

In Double IPA, Reviews on October 7, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Another Pennsylvania brewery, Stoudts’ makes some really quality beers.  I was able to get my hands on their Double IPA and bring one down to New Orleans to taste. Here’s my review:

Pours a bright amber/ burnt “orange Jell-O” color with a light capping of foam.  Very pretty beer.

Caramel malt and fruity hops dominate the nose.  Some grain, booze and peach, apricot and dried orange notes as well.  So far I am very intrigued in this beer and ready for my first sip.

Looks good, smells good, tastes good.  Sweet caramel maltiness up front on the tongue, followed by some mellow hop fruitiness, I am finding apricot and mango.  These flavors precede mild hop bitterness with a warming alcohol finish.

Great looking beer, a little high in the alcohol heat in the nose, and has a taste close to that of a barleywine.  Not really my favorite DIPA, but I enjoyed the malt presence, while the hops were a little too subtle for my tastes.  Well done but not customized to my palette, but still very good.

Style: Imperial IPA

ABV: 10%

Cheers!
